About Us
We Facet Over 24,000 Gemstones a Year for Customers Just Like You Who Find Sapphires in Our Gravel.
Long story short.
Gem Mountain is family owned and operated by the Cooney Family for the purpose of entertaining treasure-seeking visitors from around the world.
We are situated in a very accessible area of spectacular natural beauty that is rarely visited or seen by millions of visitors who hurry by on their way to either Glacier or Yellowstone National Park.
Gem Mountain has two amazing locations. You can visit us at the Mine, open seasonally, on Highway 38. The road is paved to our front gate, and we are only a few miles off one of Montana’s most popular scenic drives, the Pintler Scenic Route, on MT Hwy 1, between Anaconda and Drummond.
You can also find the same great natural gravel products in historic downtown Philipsburg. Open year-round with an indoor sapphire washing area. There is limited space on a first come, first served basis.

We provide everything you’ll need to find your own Montana Sapphires. We have an excellent staff to do the heavy lifting and show you how to find your sapphires. Searching for your own Gem Mountain Sapphires is FUN! You wash the gravel; you find your very own sapphires. It rocks! (no pun intended) Good, kind-of-dirty, family fun! Wear your grubby clothes, or we have aprons for sale to help keep you clean.
Gem Mountain sapphires make stunning jewelry! When you’ve found all of your sapphires our expert staff can grade your sapphires for gem quality. Check our the Heat Treating & Faceting section for more information. Nothing compares to wearing jewelry with a precious gemstone that you found!
