Gem Mountain is family owned and operated by the Cooney Family for the purpose of entertaining treasure-seeking visitors from around the world.  We offer free camping and supply all of the tools and equipment needed for you to find sapphires at no additional cost.
 
Chris Cooney purchased the property in the winter of 2000/2001 and re-opened Gem Mountain to the general public.  (The previous owners attempted a large scale commercial mining operation and closed Gem Mountain to the public in the fall of 1993.)  Prior to 1993 Gem Mountain operated as a family owned business under two different owners for over 30 years. 
 
Growth of the business has resulted in the need for a wonderful staff of 24.  Most of the crew has worked at Gem Mountain for several years.  We've become friends with many of our customers and welcome them back year after year.

We now have a year-round store in Philipsburg.  The Philipsburg store offers the same great products and services from the people you know and a much larger variety of unique gifts and treasures.

 

In the picture below customers crowd the store to have their rough sapphire checked to see if they are gem quality.

Mellonee Grange runs the till, while Chris Cooney, Mariah Cooney and Betty Tillerson grade stones.  Mariah is only 12 in this picture, and still, the four of us have over 40 years of gemstone grading experience.
